This book aims to discuss the remarkable bibliophilic passion of the kings of the Ptolemaic dynasty, examining, based on ancient testimonials and modern exegesis, the means they employed to acquire as many books as possible for the Library of Alexandria, the subjects these books covered, and the extent to which we can speak about bibliophilic ecumenism, knowing that this library not only housed works by Greek authors but also some written by foreign authors in Greek or translated into this language. What’s new this study lies primarily in its discussion of the book acquisition policy for the Alexandrian library, a detailed presentation of the methods used by various Ptolemaic kings, and an explanation of their motivations in establishing such a policy, within the different social and historical contexts that emerged during their reigns in Hellenistic Egypt.

An «original contribution of this study lies in the author’s classification of the methods of acquisition: the purchase of books at fairs both in Egypt and abroad, through agents specially appointed by the king and supplied with generous funds for this purpose; the confiscation of books found on ships docking at the port of Alexandria, for which the owners received, in exchange, high-quality papyrus copies of the originals together with financial compensation; the solicitation of books through correspondence with foreign rulers; and the commissioning of works to be written by order of the kings. The author also considers the number of volumes acquired and their classification. She observes that, as one might expect, the Greek collection was the richest, while among foreign works she devotes particular attention to the Greek translation of Bible (Septuagint). The inventory of subject areas attests to the immense diversity, breadth, and exceptional quality of the acquisitions.»

Cartea își propune să pună în discuţie uimitoarea pasiune bibliofilă a regilor dinastiei Lagide, cercetând, în baza mărturiilor vremii și a exegezei moderne, modalitățile de achiziție la care au recurs aceștia pentru a aduna cât mai multe cărţi în Biblioteca din Alexandria, căror domenii le aparţineau acestea și în ce măsură se poate vorbi de un ecumenism bibliofil, știind că în această bibliotecă nu au existat doar cărți scrise de autori greci, ci şi unele scrise de autori străini în limba greacă sau traduse în această limbă. Noutatea lucrării constă, cu precădere, în discutarea politicii de achiziție a cărților pentru biblioteca alexandrină, prezentarea detaliată a metodelor utilizate de diferiți regi Lagizi și explicarea motivației pe care au avut-o aceștia în a institui o astfel de politică, în diferitele contexte social-istorice create pe parcursul domniei lor în Egiptul elenistic.
«Lucrarea de față se înscrie ca o contribuție originală în problematica vastă a civilizației elenistice, prin reliefarea aportului regilor din dinastia Lagidă la crearea unui adevărat imperialism cultural, având ca focar Alexandria Egiptului. Interesul, chiar pasiunea lor pentru cartea de orice proveniență, literară și științifică, greacă sau străină, este bine reliefat și serios documentat de autoarea lucrării, autorizând ideea ecumenismului bibliofil care constituie lait-motivul lucrării. «…un element original îl reprezintă clasificarea procedeelor de achiziție realizată de către autoare: cumpărarea cărților din târgurile de carte din Egipt și din afara lui, prin intermediul unor agenți desemnați de rege, care le punea la dispoziție un buget generos în acest scop; confiscarea cărților găsite la bordul navelor care acostau în portul Alexandriei, în schimbul originalelor proprietarii primind copii ale acestora, scrise pe papirus de cea mai bună calitate, proprietarii fiind, de asemenea, recompensați financiar pentru cărțile originale confiscate; solicitarea de cărți în corespondența cu suveranii străini; scrierea unor cărți la ordinul regilor. Autoarea are în vedere și numărul de volume achiziționat și maniera de clasificare a cărților; ea constată că, în mod firesc, fondul de carte greacă era cel mai bogat, iar în privința fondului de carte străină, insistă asupra Bibliei ebraice și asupra traducerii ei în greacă. Daniela Orzață (b. 1979, Constanța, Romania) has held a PhD in History since 2021, awarded by the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași, Faculty of History, for a dissertation entitled The Bibliophilic Ecumenism of the Lagid Dynasty, which was published in 2023 by the university’s press. She graduated from the Faculty of Letters of the same university in 2002, with a specialization in Classical Languages (Latin and Ancient Greek), and subsequently completed a Master’s degree in Aegean–Mediterranean Studies there in 2005. During her university studies, she received scholarships from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece). She has participated in numerous national and international symposia and scholarly conferences, and has published reviews as well as several articles in specialized journals. Since 2007, she has been teaching Modern Greek and Ancient Greek at the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Alexandria (Egypt), and she is a member of the Archaeological Society of Alexandria.

Daniela Orzață (n. 1979, Constanța) este doctor în istorie din anul 2021, titlu obținut în cadrul Universității „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” din Iași, Facultatea de Istorie, cu o teză de doctorat ce poartă titlul prezentei lucrări. A absolvit Facultatea de Litere (Limbi clasice: Latină-Greacă veche) din cadrul Universității „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” din Iași (2002), a continuat apoi cu un master în Studii Egeo Mediteraneene (2005), tot în cadrul Universității „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” din Iași. În perioada studiilor universitare, a beneficiat de burse de studiu în cadrul universităților „Aristotel” din Salonic și „Kapodistria” din Atena (Grecia). A participat la nume-roase simpozioane și conferințe științifice naționale și internaționale; a publicat, de asemenea, recenzii și o serie de articole în reviste de specialitate. Începând cu anul 2007 lucrează ca profesor de limba greacă modernă și greacă veche la Fundația Culturală Elenă din Alexandria (Egipt) și este membră a Asociației Arheologice din Alexandria (Egipt).
