Biomaterials have a major impact on the medicine practice as they are in direct and indirect contact with the human body, in all disease treatment stages, from diagnostic to therapy and healing. Thus, the biomaterials are used as implants, surgical fibers, components of devices that restore the functions of living tissues or organs, biosensors, bags for blood transport. According to their use in medical applications, the biomaterials must be designed to preserve the patient’s health and to improve the quality of life. The biomaterials industry has to solve difficulties such as the rapid transfer of scientific results into medical practice with clear medical benefits and minimum risks for healthcare, and to sell less expensive products.
Plasma chemical modification of 2 and 3-D structures in cell-surface interaction studies, Medical applications of dielectric barrier discharge, Membranes and plasma processing: from synthesis to applications, Use of atmospheric plasma treatments to modify cell surface interaction and protein adhesion, Treatment with low-pressure oxygen plasmas to enhance the surface properties of rubber materials etc.
This book contains contributions from important research leaders in Europe, recognized for their theoretical and practical expertise in plasma physics, chemistry and biomaterials science, presented at the workshop entitled Manipulation of the Biomaterials Surface by Plasma Processing 26 – 30 May 2010, Iaşi, România.
