Rezultat al Conferinței Comisiei Internaționale de Istorie a Orașelor, organizată în 18-20 septembrie 2023 la Iași, volumul reunește o parte din comunicările acestei reuniuni științifice, patronată de președintele Comisiei, prof. Roman Czaja. Tema întâlnirii a fost „Mediating urban order”, iar cei care au comunicat și au trimis studii pentru volumul de față sunt profesori și cercetători renumiți în domeniul istoriei urbane din Austria, Norvegia, Polonia, Cehia, Slovenia, Lituania și România. Volumul ar reprezenta o apariție unică în România pe acest subiect.

Urban order is quite a broad subject, even when focusing solely on Europe. Cities had their own distinctive worlds, with people whose concerns differed from those of the village or the noble and clerical elites, although these societal segments were not isolated and often interacted. Governed by their own institutions and aiming to retain as much autonomy as possible, cities sought to establish their own order, marked by their specific laws, in accordance with the concerns and perspectives of their inhabitants, whether in the Middle Ages or the modern era. This conference examined how this order was mediated, with case studies spanning the Middle Ages to the early 20th century across Europe. It should be emphasised, however, that the majority of the contributions address the medieval towns. Mediation was discussed because the concept of order can seem rigid, as it was shaped and adapted to the specificities of each place. The papers presented at the conference focused on a wide range of instruments — such as texts, images, maps, seals, rituals, urban planning, media, and public events — used to articulate and communicate concepts of urban order and the discourse surrounding them, in which town lords, municipal authorities, and the civic community participated. The geographical scope of the research presented extends from Norway in the north to the cities of present-day Slovenia and Istria in the south, and includes urban centres of Central and East-Central Europe.» (Laurențiu Rădvan, Roman Czaja)

Roman Czaja, Professor at the Faculty of History, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland. Ph.D. in History since 1991, with research focusing on the medieval urban history of Poland and the Baltic Sea area, historical cartography, and the history of the Teutonic Order. Recent publications include: Der Deutsche Orden in Europa und in der Region: Festschrift für Udo Arnold zum 85.
